Our Association's first annual
Open House held on Wednesday, September 4th, was a rousing success.
We had terrific participation from city and state offices and representatives
and a good turnout of neighbors during the Open House, which ran from
6:30 until 8:00 p.m. at Jenkins Memorial Church.
Exhibits and information regarding
a wide variety of city, state, and neighborhood services were available,
with experts on hand to answer questions. Neighbors who came were
able to learn more about:
- The Liveable Streets Initiative
- The City of Raleigh Neighborhood Improvement Matching Grant Program
- The Raleigh Neighborhood College
- Water Conservation, Solid Waste, and Recycling
- State and Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits
- Public Safety and Personal Security
- Rain Barrels by The Rain King
of Raleigh
- Earth Machine composters
Information regarding the Historic
Glenwood-Brooklyn Neighborhood Association was also available, including
copies of our By-Laws, a 2002/2003 Calendar of Events, and information
regarding the history of the neighborhood and individual houses in
Glenwood-Brooklyn. We even had t-shirts and sweatshirts for sale!
Special thanks to our District
Councilor, Benson Kirkman, our At Large Councilors, Janet Cowell and
Neal Hunt, and Raleigh's Mayor, Charles Meeker, who all came out to
talk with us, share important information, answer questions, and listen
to our ideas.
Neighbors shared ideas on how to
improve the neighborhood <below> and downtown Raleigh <below>.
Plenty of food and drink, balloons, and interaction with neighbors,
made the evening festive and fun.
Many positive comments were received
about the enthusiastic participation and the variety of important
and pertinent information available at the Open House. If you were
able to join us, Thank You! for coming out. We hope to see you soon
at a monthly Association Meeting, one of our upcoming events - or
next year in September at our Second Annual Open House!
